Swallowed

Harmful if swallowed. May cause allergic reaction characterised by a rash. May cause severe irritation of the digestive tract.

Eye

May cause eye irritation.

Skin

May cause skin irritation. May be absorbed through the skin in harmful amounts. May cause skin sensitisation, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.

Inhaled

May cause respiratory tract irritation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic ingestion may cause liver damage. May cause cancer according to animal studies. May cause reproductive and foetal effects. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause thyroid damage.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If victim is conscious and alert, give 2 - 4 cupfuls of milk or water to drink. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately. Induce vomiting by giving one teaspoon of Ipecac syrup. Call a immediately.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately.

Skin

Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.

Inhaled

Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention immediately.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient. Material may cause depression of bone marrow.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 125 mg/kg (Rat) Dermal LD50 = >2800 mg/kg (Rabbit) Inhalation LC50 = >170 mg/m3/4hr (Rat) Carcinogenicity : Category 2 Carcinogen - probable human carcinogen. Thiourea has been observed to cause tumours in the liver, lungs, ears, skin and thyroid of rats. Morphological transformations have been observed in rat and hamster embryos exposed to thiourea. Developmental abnormalities of the musculoskeletal and central nervous system were observed in rats administered thiourea orally 12 days after conception. The rate of post-implantation increased in rats administered thiourea orally 12 days after conception. RTECS reports DNA inhibition studies in human fibroblasts, lymphocytes and Hela cells. Unscheduled DNA synthesis and DNA damage studies have also been reported

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

No exposure limit has been established for htis product by Worksafe however the following exists for nuisance dusts : TWA 10 mg/m3.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain airborne concentrations to a minimum, including the use of local and/or general exhaust ventilation.

3.3 Personal Protection

Eyes - wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles. Skin - wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing to minimise/prevent skin contact. Respiratory - wear an appropriate respirator when dusty conditions prevail. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Non combustible material.
